Techex delivers Spotlight studio-to-transmitter monitoring for Comux’s DTT platform
Comux UK, the community-owned business operating the new local TV broadcasting platform, has implemented Techex’s Spotlight software to deliver integrated monitoring services.
Designed specifically for broadcasters and service providers, Spotlight provides a distributed monitoring service that collates data from remote locations and combines it with live transmission return video feeds. Polling over 1,000 different monitoring parameters, Spotlight helps Comux’s MCR operators see the status of the core broadcast network from one screen, allowing faults to be quickly identified without referencing multiple systems. The multi-platform software supports tablets and mobile devices so supervisors can view data from any location.
In a first for UK DTT, selected data will be shared with local TV channel license holders via a secure web page, so that they have their own live view of the network, including being able to monitor the live feed from the transmitter and view RF statistics and other relevant data. For example, when a channel submits new Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) data, the submission is transferred to Digital UK via Techex’s automation system, then probed from the off-air feed and displayed on the Spotlight web page. This gives the license holders confidence that the infrastructure is performing as expected, and reduces routine support calls to Comux’s Network Operations Centre (NOC).
Techex has so far integrated 23 different types of device for this project. Spotlight’s open architecture means many types of device are supported, and new devices can be added without additional licensing costs. A web-based device builder makes it straightforward to add new devices and polling variables.
Following the launch event on Tuesday 26th November 2013, Dominic Foulkes, Technical Manager, Techex said “Techex is a highly customer-focussed organisation, which makes us a natural partner for Comux, who have shown they are determined to furnish the local TV licensees with transparent and up-to-date information about the infrastructure upon which they will rely. Our team has successfully built a 19 channel broadcast network in just 18 weeks from contract to launch, and integrated tools such as Spotlight allow that new network to rival the systems of most major operators.”
Techex's core business is assisting its partners to benefit from the advantages brought about by IP transmission. It has unrivalled experience in implementing IP based solutions and has built up an impressive list of clients including BSkyB, BBC, Arqiva, Globecast, Disney and Discovery.
